Dissecting the AEIS Assessment Secondary 1 Math

Introduction

Is your child planning to sit for the AEIS examination to enroll on Singapore schools? The AEIS examination stands for Admissions Exercise for International Students, available for primary and secondary school levels.

For this article, we will be highlighting the assessment of the AEIS Maths Paper portion, one of two papers (the other being the English Paper) that any foreign student applying to study in Singapore has to go through, as part of the AEIS.

We hope that this article will allow you to understand what the examination will consist of and enable you to help your child to do better in the AEIS examinations.

Who should take the AEIS?

This test is for international students seeking admissions to Primary 2 to 5 and

Secondary 1 to 3 for the following academic year.

What does the AEIS exam cover?

This exam covers mainly English and Math topics that were taught in the preceding year that the students want to apply for.

So if your child wants to be admitted to the Secondary 3 level, the test will cover topics within Secondary 2.

When is the AEIS exam?

For the 2022 AEIS, the application period will start in July 2022 while the tests will be conducted sometime in September or October 2022.

So what does the Maths Paper assessment consist of?

In this article, I will be showcasing the AEIS Sec 1 Maths assessment paper. The content tested would be Primary Six Maths.

Mathematics Paper

Part 2	Short-Answer Questions	20	1 hour and 45 minutes
	Open-ended Questions	10 to 15

Content of each Part:

Part 1 comprises 34 Multiple-Choice Questions.

Usually, the first 10 questions are IQ-based questions. IQ-based questions refer to questions that test a student’s ability to cognitively identify patterns in numbers, shapes (2D and 3D) and idea linkages.

The remaining 24 questions will test the candidate based on the Primary Six Mathematics syllabus. Topics may include the following:

Whole Numbers
Fractions (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division)
Decimals (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division)
Units of Measurement
Ratios and Rates
Percentages
Time
Money
Consumer Maths
Expression and Properties
Two-dimensional Figures
Geometric Measurement
Data and Graphs

Part 2 consists of

20 Short Answer Questions
10 to 15 Open-ended Questions
The 20 Short Answer Questions would require the candidate to calculate and show some simple mathematical calculations to find an answer to each question.

For example, finding the value of 3/5 x 20 or a simple problem sum like:

Roger had $26 more than Eliza. After giving some money to Eliza, he had $10 less than Eliza. How much money did Roger give to Eliza?

The 10 to 15 Open-ended Questions would require the candidate to do multiple calculations to derive answers to each sub-part of each question. They are commonly known as “problem sums” in our local Singaporean context.
