Afghanistan Primary 4 Curriculum - Dari / Pashto (depending on region)

The Afghan education system follows a 6-3-3 structure: 6 years of primary school, 3 years of lower secondary, and 3 years of upper secondary. Primary school starts at age 7 and is divided into two cycles: Lower Primary (grades 1-3) and Higher Primary (grades 4-6).

Lower Primary (Grades 1-3) focuses on foundational skills and includes subjects such as:

• Religious Studies
• First Language (Dari or Pashto, depending on the region)
• Mathematics
• Art
• Physical Education

Higher Primary (Grades 4-6) builds upon the lower primary curriculum and introduces additional subjects:

• Science
• History
• Geography
• Second Language (Dari or Pashto, depending on the region)

Students are educated in either Dari or Pashto, depending on the region. Upon completion of grade 6, students must pass a national exam to enter lower secondary school.

Recent curriculum revisions have focused on aligning the content with Sharia law and Afghan culture, with some topics deemed inappropriate being removed. The Ministry of Education is working towards improving the quality, relevance, access, and management of the education system.
