Armenia 5th Grade Music Curriculum

Armenian Folk Music

Carnegie Hall's Musical Explorers Program introduces elementary school students to diverse musical traditions, including Armenian folk music. The vocal trio Zulal leads this exploration, teaching students traditional Armenian songs that depict village life. Students learn about unison singing, a characteristic of Armenian folk music, and how Zulal incorporates harmonies and instruments to enrich these songs. One of the songs taught is "Doni Yar," through which students explore the concept of harmony. Another featured song and dance is "Tamzara," which allows students to explore strong and weak beats in uneven rhythms. The program also provides teachers with resources to further explore Armenian culture. Zulal's involvement in the program has brought Armenian folk music to thousands of students.
