United Kingdom Year 4 Curriculum - Mathematics

This course covers a range of mathematical concepts, focusing on building a solid foundation in number operations, fractions, measurement, geometry, and statistics. Problem-solving and reasoning skills are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Number and Place Value

Students will develop their understanding of numbers up to 10,000. This includes comparing and ordering numbers, rounding to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000, and reading and writing Roman numerals to 100.

Addition and Subtraction

Building on previous years, Year 4 emphasizes using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction) for increasingly large numbers, including those exceeding four digits. Students will also estimate and check answers, and solve problems involving these operations.

Multiplication and Division

Fluency in times tables up to 12x12 is crucial, along with understanding multiplication and division by 1 and 0. The curriculum introduces multiplying and dividing two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout. Problem-solving using multiplication and division is also a key component.

Fractions

Students will work with fractions equivalent to 1, and add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. They will also learn to count up and down in tenths and hundredths, and calculate fractions of amounts.

Measurement

This topic focuses on converting between different units of measurement (e.g., kilometers to meters, hours to minutes). Students will also calculate the perimeter of rectilinear figures and find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares.

Geometry

Year 4 introduces the properties of shapes, including classifying triangles (isosceles, equilateral, scalene) and quadrilaterals. Students will learn about acute and obtuse angles, and begin working with coordinates and translations.

Statistics

Interpreting and presenting data is a key focus, using graphical methods such as bar charts and time graphs. Students will solve comparison, sum, and difference problems using information presented in various formats.

Problem Solving and Reasoning

Problem-solving and reasoning skills are embedded throughout the curriculum. Students are challenged to apply their mathematical knowledge to real-world problems and explain their reasoning.
