Design Technology (Year 9)
This course introduces students to the core concepts of design, materials, and manufacturing processes. Students develop practical skills in designing and making products, while also learning about the impact of design and technology on daily life and the wider world. The curriculum emphasizes the iterative design process, encouraging students to refine their work based on evaluation and testing.
Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3, Design Technology provides a foundation for further study at GCSE level. Students explore a range of materials and techniques, including:
- 3D Design: Working with resistant materials, graphics, and product design.
- Textiles: Learning about different fabrics and construction methods.
- Food Preparation and Nutrition: Developing culinary skills and understanding nutritional principles.
Some schools allow students to specialize in two areas within Design Technology during Year 9. This specialization allows for deeper exploration and skill development in chosen areas.
Project Examples
Year 9 Design Technology projects often involve designing and creating functional products. Examples include:
- Lamp Project: Designing and manufacturing a lamp using battery and/or solar technology.
- CAD/CAM Pen Pot: Utilizing computer-aided design and manufacturing to create a pen pot.
- 3D Printed Architecture: Exploring architectural design principles through 3D printing.
- Mini Design Portfolio: Creating a portfolio showcasing the design process from initial concept to final product.
- Mobile Phone Project: Researching, designing, and potentially creating models or prototypes related to mobile phone technology.
Additional project examples can be found online.
GCSE Preparation
Year 9 Design Technology serves as a stepping stone towards GCSE studies. Students are introduced to the design process, problem-solving techniques, and critical evaluation skills necessary for success at the GCSE level. The course encourages students to become resourceful, innovative, and enterprising individuals. |
