Developing Practical Skills

Students in Year 7 Art and Design focus on developing fundamental skills in various art forms. These include drawing, painting, sculpting, and other techniques. Emphasis is placed on experimenting with different materials and techniques to develop creativity and imagination. For example, students may begin with still life drawing, focusing on elements like line, tone, proportion, scale, and composition. Colour theory is also introduced, with students learning to mix paints and create a colour wheel. They also explore a variety of themes and sources, working from observation and using natural forms as starting points.

Exploring Artists, Crafts, and Design

The curriculum encourages students to explore a range of artists, crafts, and design techniques from different cultures and historical periods. This exploration helps students understand how art communicates and how materials and techniques have developed over time. For example, students might study the work of Wassily Kandinsky, learning about abstract art. They may also research and present on different restaurant brands, using experimental drawing techniques, watercolours, and digital illustration.

Critical Analysis and Evaluation

Students are encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating their own work and the work of others. This involves understanding and using correct art terminology in speaking and writing. Assessment methods may include baseline assessments, rubrics, and marking frameworks based on four assessment objectives.
