UK Year 7 Sex and Relationship Education

This course focuses on equipping young people with the information, skills, and values necessary to develop healthy relationships, understand their bodies, and navigate the complexities of growing up. It covers a range of topics related to relationships, puberty, sexual health, and online safety.

Relationships

Year 7 Relationships Education focuses on various types of relationships, including family, friendships, and romantic relationships. Students learn about the qualities of healthy relationships, such as respect, communication, and boundaries. The curriculum also explores different types of love and introduces the concepts of sexual attraction and orientation in an age-appropriate manner. December 2023 saw a focus on relationship education for Year 7 students.

Puberty, Reproduction, and Sexual Health

This section of the curriculum covers the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. Students learn about the biological processes of reproduction in a factual and age-appropriate way. The curriculum also addresses sexual health, providing information about sexually transmitted infections and contraception. Information on puberty is available.

Consent

Consent is a key concept in Year 7 Sex and Relationship Education. Students learn that consent is freely given, enthusiastic, and can be withdrawn at any time. They are taught to understand the importance of respecting boundaries and the legal implications of sexual activity without consent. The curriculum emphasizes that consent applies to all aspects of relationships, not just sexual activity. Information on consent is available.

Online Safety

Online safety is an integral part of Sex and Relationship Education in Year 7. Students learn about the potential risks associated with online interactions, including cyberbullying, sexting, and online grooming. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of protecting personal information online and seeking help if they encounter inappropriate content or behavior. Some schools introduce password security and computer health and safety in Year 7.
