UK Year 7 Physical Education

The UK Year 7 Physical Education curriculum aims to develop students' physical literacy, competence, and confidence across a range of activities. It encourages lifelong participation in physical activity and promotes a healthy, active lifestyle. The curriculum typically covers several key areas:

Key Areas of Study

Games

  • Invasion Games: These involve teams attempting to invade each other's territory to score, such as football, hockey, rugby, netball, and basketball. Students learn the rules, strategies, and tactics of these games, developing teamwork and communication skills.
  • Net & Wall Games: These involve hitting an object over a net or against a wall, such as badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Students develop hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and strategic thinking.
  • Striking & Fielding Games: These involve hitting a ball and running between bases or wickets, such as cricket, rounders, and softball. Students develop batting, bowling/throwing, and fielding skills, along with tactical awareness.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics focuses on body management, control, and strength. Students learn and refine various movements, including jumps, rolls, balances, and traveling. They develop spatial awareness, coordination, and flexibility.

Athletics

Athletics covers track and field events such as running, jumping, and throwing. Students develop fundamental movement skills, speed, power, and endurance. They also learn about the rules and techniques of different athletic disciplines.

Dance

Dance encourages creative expression and physical skills development through movement. Students explore different dance styles, learn choreography, and develop rhythm, timing, and coordination.

Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Some schools may include outdoor and adventurous activities in their Year 7 PE curriculum. These activities can include orienteering, climbing, and team-building exercises. They promote problem-solving skills, resilience, and teamwork.

Other Curriculum Elements

Fitness

Students learn about the components of fitness (e.g., cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility) and how to improve their fitness levels. They may participate in fitness testing and develop personalized fitness plans.

Health and Wellbeing

The curriculum emphasizes the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing. Students learn about the benefits of regular exercise, healthy eating, and active lifestyles.

Leadership and Teamwork

Many activities within the PE curriculum provide opportunities for students to develop leadership and teamwork skills. They learn to communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and take on leadership roles.

Assessment

Assessment in Year 7 PE typically involves a combination of formative and summative methods. Teachers may observe students' performance in activities, assess their understanding of rules and techniques, and evaluate their progress towards learning outcomes.
