United Kingdom Year 2 Music Syllabus

This syllabus outlines the key learning areas for Music in Year 2 within the United Kingdom, based on the National Curriculum and Model Music Curriculum.

I. Singing

  • Sing songs regularly, achieving accurate pitch within the range of do-so.
  • Demonstrate understanding of dynamics (loud/quiet) and tempo (fast/slow) by responding to instructions and visual symbols.

II. Listening

  • Develop an understanding of the context behind music, including its stories, origins, and traditions.
  • Experience live music performances, both in and out of school.
  • Suggested Listening:
      • Western Classical Tradition and Film: Ravel's "Bolero," Mozart's "Rondo alla Turca," Holst's "Mars from The Planets," Anna Clyne's "Night Ferry"
      • Popular Music: Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," The Beatles' "With A Little Help from My Friends," Kate Bush's "Wild Man," Ma Rainey's "Runaway Blues"
      • Musical Traditions: "Baris" (Gamelan, Indonesia), "Fanfarra (Cabua-Le-Le)" (Samba, Brazil)

III. Composing

  • Create music inspired by non-musical stimuli (e.g., a storm, a race).
  • Improvise simple question and answer musical phrases with a partner.
  • Use graphic symbols and basic notation to record compositions.
  • Utilize music technology to capture and manipulate sounds (if available).

IV. Musicianship

  • Pulse/Beat:
      • Understand changes in tempo (speed of the beat).
      • Respond to the beat through movement and identify beat groupings in music.
  • Rhythm:
      • Create and perform rhythms based on word phrases.
      • Read and respond to chanted rhythm patterns, using basic notation.
  • Pitch:
      • Match pitch accurately in singing games.
      • Sing short phrases independently and respond to pitch changes.
      • Recognize and match dot notation to simple tunes.
