UAE Grade 11-12 Computing Curriculum
This curriculum focuses on developing computational thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity through various subjects and electives. Computer science education is mandatory in primary and secondary schools across the UAE.
Core Computing Subjects
The Ministry of Education emphasizes continuous refinement of the Computer Science and ICT curriculum, aligning it with best practices. Some schools offer IGCSE and A-Level Computer Science courses for students interested in digital sector careers. The curriculum aims to equip students with skills for creative problem-solving. Topics covered may include hardware, software development, computational thinking, computer logic, networking, and computer communication.
A study from 1991/2 examined a computer course introduced by the Ministry of Education for first-year secondary students. A framework for K-12 computer science and technology education standards was developed, reflecting world-class expectations. The Ministry of Education partnered with Code.org in February 2023 to enhance computer science education, focusing on creating technology rather than just using it. This collaboration aims to raise awareness about computer science and integrate it into the curriculum.
Computing, Creative Design and Innovation (CCDI) Elective
Starting May 2023, the UAE implemented an elective subject model for Grade 11 and 12 students, including CCDI. This elective combines computing, creative design, and innovation, allowing students to design their academic journey. It focuses on the intersection of technology, art, and design. A case study published in 2024 by UNESCO examines the AI integration in the UAE's K-12 CCDI curriculum. A teacher's guide for a Creative Design and Innovation course, including instructional planners and learning outcomes, is available. Assessment for CCDI is included in the Ministry of Education's Assessment Policy Guidebook.
Teacher Licensing (TLS)
Teachers of Computer Science in the UAE are required to have a Teacher's License, which includes a Computer Science Test covering the Ministry of Education curriculum. Resources for TLS Computer Science preparation are available online. |
