UAE Grade 5 Science Curriculum (based on GEMS Our Own English High School Sharjah)

The GEMS Our Own English High School Sharjah Science Curriculum for Grade 5 covers the following topics:

  • My Body: Skeletal system, Nervous system, Structure of Sense organs. Students learn about the functions of the skeletal system, parts of the skeletal system, functions of joints, the structure of the nervous system, different parts of the nervous system, reflex actions, and the structure of different sense organs.
  • Food and Health: Food and its components, Diseases. Students learn about the important components of food, the importance of each nutrient, the advantages of a balanced diet, communicable and non-communicable diseases, how diseases spread, and disease prevention methods.
  • Animals: Habitats, Adaptations. Students learn about different animal habitats, characteristics of animals in those habitats, the importance of different body coverings, respiratory organs in different animals, how mouth parts differ based on food habits, and animal adaptations for movement.
  • Plants: Germination, Seed Dispersal, Agriculture. Students learn about the process of germination, different methods of growing new plants, methods of seed dispersal, the importance of agriculture, and rabi and kharif crops.
  • Air: Layers of Air, Properties of Air. Students learn about the different layers of the atmosphere, their importance, and the properties of air.
  • Force and Energy: Effects and Types of Forces, Types of Energy, Simple Machines. Students learn about the effects of force, different types of forces, advantages and disadvantages of friction, uses of energy, different types of energy, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, uses of simple machines, types of simple machines, and types of levers.
  • Light and Shadow: Materials and Light, Shadows and its Features. Students learn to classify materials based on light transmission, investigate shadow formation, and identify factors affecting shadow size.
  • Universe: Structure of Earth, Eclipses. Students learn about the internal structure of Earth, different features of Earth's layers, the two types of eclipses, and the differences between solar and lunar eclipses.

This curriculum emphasizes hands-on activities, experiments, and real-life applications to enhance understanding. It also incorporates cross-curricular links with other subjects like Math, Social Studies, and English. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process, and includes periodic tests, notebook maintenance, subject enrichment activities, and external examinations like ASSET, CAT 4, and TIMSS. The curriculum also aims to instill life skills and eco-values in students.
