UAE Year 5 Science Curriculum

This curriculum outlines the key learning objectives for Year 5 Science, focusing on developing a comprehensive understanding of various scientific concepts through experimental and inquiry-based learning. Below are the topics covered throughout the academic year, divided by term.

Term 1

  • Animals, Including Humans: Students learn about the human life cycle, from birth to old age, and compare it with the life cycle of plants. They also explore the different stages of human and plant development.
  • Earth and Space: This topic covers the movement of Earth and other planets relative to the Sun within the solar system. Students also learn about the Moon's movement relative to Earth and how Earth's rotation causes day and night. The concept of gravity and its effect on falling objects is introduced.

Term 2

  • Properties of Changing Materials: Students investigate the properties of everyday materials through comparative and fair tests. They explore hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and magnetic properties. Methods for separating mixtures, such as filtering, sieving, and evaporating, are examined. Students also learn about reversible changes like dissolving, mixing, and changes of state, and irreversible changes like burning and the reaction of acid with bicarbonate of soda.
  • Forces: This term expands on the concept of gravity and introduces air resistance, water resistance, and friction. Students learn how simple machines like levers, pulleys, and gears can amplify forces.

Term 3

  • Light: Students explore the properties of light, learning that it travels in straight lines. They investigate how light allows us to see objects and how shadows are formed.
  • Living Things and Habitats: This topic focuses on the life cycles of different animal groups, including mammals, amphibians, insects, and birds. Students learn about reproduction and variation within species.

Assessments:

Student progress is evaluated through various formal and informal assessments, including CAT 4 and GL Assessments. These assessments aim to gauge students' understanding of the concepts covered. Evaluations include end-of-unit tests, projects, lab reports, and formal assessments.
