South Korea Elementary School 6th Grade Curriculum - Moral Education

Moral education in South Korea has undergone several revisions since 1945. The 6th curriculum, established on June 30, 1992, emphasized communitarian ethics and integrated activities across subjects, including a focus on unification.

Ethics (3rd-6th Grade)

The subject "Ethics" is taught for two hours per week from 3rd to 6th grade. In 6th grade, it represents 6% of the total class hours. Two textbooks (a main textbook and a storybook) are used per semester.

The curriculum covers 26 virtues across five life areas:

• Personal: Joy & safety, faithfulness, respect for life, independence, thoughtfulness, temperance, will to practice
• Family & Neighborhood: Etiquette, filial piety, tolerance, veneration, love of one's school & native land
• Citizenship: Trust, law-abiding, respect for others, cooperation, public good, justice
• National: Love of nation & state, cooperation to national development, brotherly love and international friendship
• Unification & Defense: Aspiration to unification, critical understanding of North Korea, awareness of division between south and north, spirit of national defense
