What’s your name?

I’m Kyle Tham and I specialise in teaching the English Language to all levels and ages for various purposes, ranging from exam preparation to Business English, creative writing, public speaking and phonics, to name a few. Hailing from a business background, I also teach business subjects such as Economics, Business Studies and my personal favourite, Accounting.

What’s your teaching experience?

I started teaching when I was in the first year of my university and I don’t remember taking any break from teaching ever since. As I majored in Accounting, I initially taught the Accounting for Business subject in Taylor’s University to a group of accounting students. In those 2.5 years, I found my passion in teaching and progressed to tutoring high school students in various institutions and schools. While I specialised in teaching the IGCSE First Language English, I also had the opportunity to teach other business subjects such as Accounting, Economics and Business Studies. I did that for 5 years on a part-time basis, while working in my full-time job as a Writer and Trainer, which I believe had given me the skills and knowledge that would add value to my students’ learning curve. Thereafter, I decided to focus on my teaching profession and flew myself to Belfast, UK to train as a teacher. Now, with a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and a CELTA, I teach in an international school, targeting Year 11 students for the IGCSE First Language English subject. To date, I have taught for 1.5 years in this school and can’t wait to explore even more prospects in the near future.

How do you teach that helps students learn efficiently?

My mantra goes like this: “The English language is not a subject, but a skill”. As such, I don’t believe in cramming those Grammar and Composition books down my students’ throats. As it’s a very practical language, I ensure that it is taught in the same manner.

On this note, I ensure that students are exposed to how the English language is used in the real world by means of games, videos and activities. Students will have to put their linguistic repertoire to work through interactions and discussions; the size of this course will make these things work! As a class, we will look into interesting and engaging topics, while actively using the language. The fun and pragmatic approach takes priority in my lessons.

But of course, the preparation towards examination is also a crucial element in the equation. As such, worksheets, past-year papers and writing exercises are inevitable. It’s another way of producing language to serve exam purposes. Students will build confidence along the way and will be able to undertake any English examination without any complication.

Why do you enjoy teaching?

It has to be the joy of seeing my students improve over time, in terms of their confidence, skills and use of language. The process, the relationship building and the trust that are built over time make it such a meaningful job. I can’t be a doctor, so, I guess I will have to change lives through other means.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I am a man of many hats as I love learning and exploring things that interest me. Amongst others, I am a Face Reader! It has nothing to do with Facebook, I promise.
