Sri Lanka Grade 2 School Syllabus - English

This syllabus focuses on Activity Based Oral English (ABOE), integrated into Environmental Related Activities (ERA). It aims to develop basic English vocabulary and sentence structures. The syllabus is divided into two modules covering 16 themes.

Module 1

  • We and the School: Students learn greetings (e.g., "Good morning," "Hello"), introduce themselves ("I'm..."), ask for names ("What's your name?"), and learn vocabulary related to school environments (e.g., "principal," "office," "classroom," "canteen"). Activities include songs, games (e.g., "Roll the ball," "Swapping places"), and drawing activities.
  • Our Home: Students learn vocabulary related to the home (e.g., "house," "roof," "wall," "window," "door," "room," "kitchen," "garden") and family members (e.g., "father," "mother," "brother," "sister," "grandmother," "grandfather"). They practice asking questions using "Who" (e.g., "Who is this?") and responding ("This is my..."). Activities include songs, games (e.g., "Bits of paper"), True/False activities, and drawing.
  • Animals around us: Students learn animal names (e.g., "horse," "bee," "rabbit," "monkey," "fish," "elephant," "bull," "goat," "butterfly," "parrot," "ant," "cat") and verbs describing animal movements (e.g., "Horses run," "Bees fly," "Rabbits hop," "Monkeys jump," "Fish swim"). Activities include songs (e.g., "I see a big dog"), memory games.
  • Play with Water: Students learn vocabulary related to water activities (e.g., "boats," "seeds," "flowers," "balls," "feathers," "erasers," "soap," "leaves"). They practice using "This is..." and "These are..." Activities include songs (e.g., "Row, row, row your boat") and jumping activities.
  • Sinhala and Hindu New Year Period: Students learn vocabulary related to New Year celebrations (e.g., "crackers," "betel," "mat," "New Year fair," and names of various sellers like "pot seller," "fish seller," etc.). They practice asking and answering about possessions ("What do you have?" "I have..."). Activities include songs (e.g., "This is the way we...") and games (e.g., "Pass the bag").
  • The Sky We See: Students learn vocabulary related to the sky and weather (e.g., "sky," "sun," "stars," "rain," "bright," "wind," "day," "thunder," "sunlight," "moonlight," "balloons," "clear," "umbrella," "cold," "hat," "kite," "hot," "dry," "birds," "clouds," "moon," "dark," "night"). They practice asking and answering about what they can see ("What can you see?" "I can see..."). Activities include songs (e.g., "I hear thunder") and games (e.g., "Swapping Places").

Module 2 (and remaining themes) continue in a similar structure, building upon vocabulary and sentence structures. The syllabus also includes enrichment activities such as singing, storytelling, and creating visual materials.
