Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Grade 3 Social Studies
This curriculum is based on the OECS Primary Grades' Learning Standards for Social Studies. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of self, family, community, and nation, while building essential skills like communication, critical thinking, and map reading. The curriculum follows a spiral approach, building upon previous knowledge and expanding horizons as students progress through the grades. It emphasizes active participation, research, and cooperative learning. While these standards offer a framework, teachers are encouraged to adapt the curriculum and methodologies to suit their students' specific needs and learning styles.
Personal and Individual Identity
Students will explore their personal identity in relation to their family and heritage.
- Describe themselves by referencing their likes, dislikes, and preferences.
- Explain the concept of heritage and heredity within their immediate family.
- Create a simple family tree, including parents and children.
- Explain how surnames are inherited and how they can change (e.g., through marriage).
- Explain why siblings may have the same or different surnames.
Group Identity
Students will learn about different types of groups and how they function.
- Describe the formation and purpose of various groups (family, class, peer, religious).
- Collect pictures of different groups to create a class album and discuss the role of each group.
- Describe the bonds that unite members of different groups (e.g., love in families, respect among peers).
- Identify uniforms or other symbols that represent group identity.
Community Identity
Students will develop basic map skills and learn about their community's heritage.

- Recognize a map of their country and understand that people living in different parts share the same national identity.
- Distinguish between citizens and visitors.

Civic Responsibility
Students will learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
- Describe different ways a person can become a citizen (birth, parentage, marriage, naturalization).

- Understand that adults have the right to participate in elections.
- Identify the main duties of key political figures (Governor-General, Prime Minister, etc.).

Morals, Ethics, and Values

- List the major natural resources in their nation.
- Describe the uses of natural resources in their community.

Sustainability of the Environment
Students will learn about environmental responsibility and express their appreciation for nature.
- Describe the components of their country's natural environment.
- Express their appreciation for the environment through art (music, dance, poetry).
- Learn about ways to care for the environment (sea, beaches, forests, mountains).
- Illustrate responsible and irresponsible environmental practices through art.
