Samoa Year 13 Curriculum - Business Studies
The Year 13 class was dissolved in Samoa in 2020 as part of an education reform. Therefore, there is no current Year 13 Business Studies curriculum. Prior to this change, Business Studies was taught in Years 9-11, while economics and accounting were taught as separate subjects in Years 12 and 13.
Former Years 9-13 Business Studies Curriculum (Pre-2020)
The previous Business Studies curriculum for Years 9-13 was developed with the assistance of New Zealand consultants and based on the Samoa Secondary School Curriculum Overview Document. It aimed to equip students with knowledge and skills related to economic activities and financial resource management.
The curriculum was structured around six strands:
- Production
- Consumption
- The Market
- Accounting Applications
- Financial Accounting
- Accounting Process
These strands were designed to provide a balanced coverage of economics and accounting topics, with specific aims and achievement objectives for each level (Years 9-13). The curriculum emphasized essential skills such as communication and language, integrating them with the subject content.
Curriculum materials included:
- Curriculum statements for each subject area
- Student textbooks (Book 1 for Economics and Book 2 for Accounting)
- Teacher guides
- Off-the-shelf texts
- In-service training modules
The Ministry of Education provided these materials and conducted regular in-service training workshops for teachers to familiarize them with the curriculum and its implementation. Professional development was considered crucial for teacher quality and ongoing support for student learning and achievement.
