Gagana Samoa

This curriculum is designed to develop students' ability to critically analyze various forms of literature and other media, focusing on Samoan language and culture.

Gagana Fa'amauina (Recorded Language)

This section focuses on developing skills in analyzing and interpreting recorded language, specifically Tala Moni (true stories) and other forms of recorded Samoan literature. Students will learn to identify key themes, analyze characters and their motivations, and understand the cultural context of the stories. The curriculum emphasizes developing deep understanding and applying these analytical skills to different life situations. Students will also practice formulating well-structured responses to comprehension questions, including providing textual evidence to support their interpretations. Activities include analyzing past PSSC exam questions and practicing writing responses.

Saliliga (Research)

This section focuses on conducting research and presenting findings. Students will learn different research methods, including surveys, experimental research, ethnographic research, action research, and case studies. They will develop skills in formulating research questions, gathering and analyzing data, and presenting findings in a clear and organized report. The curriculum also emphasizes ethical considerations in research, such as informed consent and protecting participants' privacy. A key activity is conducting research on Samoan missionary work and presenting findings in a seminar.

Fatinoga o Lauga (Delivery of Speeches)

This section focuses on understanding and delivering speeches in various cultural contexts. Students will analyze different types of Samoan speeches, including formal speeches, speeches for special occasions, and traditional speeches like the lauga usu. They will learn about the structure, language, and cultural significance of these speeches. The curriculum also covers the use of proverbs, metaphors, and other rhetorical devices in Samoan oratory. Activities include analyzing and rewriting speeches, preparing and delivering speeches for different occasions, and evaluating speeches based on established criteria.

Alafa'asalalau (Media)

This section focuses on analyzing the use of the Samoan language in various media, including newspapers, television, and radio. Students will learn to identify different types of media messages, analyze the language and techniques used, and understand the underlying cultural values and beliefs. The curriculum also emphasizes the role of media in shaping public opinion and influencing behavior. Activities include analyzing advertisements, news reports, and other media messages, and creating their own media messages.

Tala Pupu'u (Short Stories)

This section focuses on analyzing Samoan short stories. Students will learn to identify key themes, analyze characters and their motivations, and understand the cultural context of the stories. The curriculum emphasizes developing deep understanding and applying these analytical skills to different life situations. A key activity is conducting research on the development of themes in two selected short stories and presenting findings in a report.
