Samoa Health & Physical Education Curriculum - Year 4

This information is based on the Samoa Primary School Curriculum for Health and Physical Education, Years 1-8, published in January 2013.

Active Personal Health

Achievement Objective: AP4.1 Explain the links between physical activity and diet on one's well-being as they continue to appreciate the need to practice basic hygiene for personal health.

  • Identity and Self-Worth: Students explore how positive and negative experiences in physical activity can affect self-esteem.
  • Growth and Development: Students investigate muscles, their movement, and nutritional needs. They also identify signs of healthy growth and assess their own development.
  • Nutrition and Physical Activity: Students explain the importance of fruit in their diet and describe/implement ways to maintain fitness and manage weight. They also explain the body's need for daily exercise.
  • Safety and Responsible Behaviour: Students review and practice basic hygiene habits, focusing on oral health. They discuss physical abuse, relating it to personal space and identifying forms they may have experienced (e.g., bullying).

Active Human Movement

Achievement Objective: AH4.1 Practice "control" of basic body movements and skills and apply rules for safety, health, and fair play practices as they participate in various activities and games.

  • Fundamental Movements: Students demonstrate combined locomotor, stability, and manipulative skills in games, showing improved control in various activities.
  • Fitness for Living: Students explain and demonstrate the value of warm-ups and cool-downs, demonstrating the value of regular daily exercise.
  • Sports Science and Technology: Students explain how modified equipment can extend movement capabilities and the importance of warming up and cooling down to prevent injuries.
  • Socialization (Attitudes, Culture, and Relationships): Students explain how trusting teammates builds confidence in group physical activities.

Active Family and Community Health

Achievement Objective: AF4.1 Explore attitudes and beliefs regarding health and physical activity as they build friendships, apply simple first aid techniques, and review safety precautions in case of accidents or fire.

  • Health Promotion: Students use information from a particular health event to promote and celebrate an aspect of it.
  • Relationships: Students demonstrate ways to make friends, establish relationships, and describe the importance of good communication. They discuss honesty and trust in friendships.
  • Protection and Responsible Behaviour: Students demonstrate basic first aid techniques for burns and practice fire safety procedures at home and school.
  • Attitudes, Beliefs, and Practices: Students describe, with examples, how attitudes and beliefs about health are shown through people's choices and practices.
