Esame di Stato (Maturità Exam)
The Esame di Stato, commonly known as the Maturità exam, is the final examination for students completing their secondary education in San Marino. The exam consists of two written tests and an oral examination.
- First Written Exam: Assesses the student's command of the Italian language, expressive abilities, and critical thinking skills. The exam may include various textual typologies and can be structured in multiple parts.
- Second Written Exam: Focuses on one or more subjects specific to the Liceo Classico program. In 2024, the subjects for the second written exam were Latin and Greek. The specific subjects are determined annually by decree.
- Oral Examination: Assesses the student's ability to discuss and elaborate on various topics presented by the examination commission. The oral exam may involve analyzing texts, documents, projects, and problems to evaluate the student's understanding of the subjects studied and their ability to connect and critically analyze information. Students also present a personal research project, a project, or a learning pathway previously agreed upon with the class council.
Grading
The final grade for the Esame di Stato is out of 100 points. A maximum of 20 points can be awarded for each written exam and the oral exam. Students can also earn up to 40 points based on their academic credits earned during the final three years of the Liceo Classico program. A minimum overall score of 60/100 is required to pass the exam. The commission can award up to 5 additional points to students who have earned at least 30 academic credits and achieved a minimum of 50 points on the exams. "Lode" (Honors) can be awarded to students who achieve the maximum score of 100 points, have not received any additional points, achieved the maximum score on each exam, and earned the maximum academic credits with a unanimous vote from the class council in the third-to-last, second-to-last, and final year. |
