San Marino Scuola Secondaria Superiore - Liceo Classico: Italian

The Liceo Classico is the oldest secondary school in the Republic of San Marino, established in 1883. Until 1981, it was the sole option for higher education within the country.

This program offers a comprehensive education designed to foster open-mindedness, critical thinking, and adaptability. It emphasizes problem-solving skills, flexible thinking, and a broad understanding of knowledge. The curriculum provides a strong foundation for future studies and careers, while also instilling an awareness of one's heritage. Graduates are well-prepared for university studies and possess strong communication skills.

The Liceo Classico combines a well-established teaching tradition with opportunities for new experiences. The small class sizes allow for a close relationship between students and teachers. While demanding, the program is rewarding and accessible to all.

The program's humanistic and literary focus has been enhanced in recent years with several educational opportunities:

  • Enhanced English Language Instruction: The program has strengthened its English language instruction to meet the demands of the contemporary world and the job market. This includes adjustments to teaching hours, educational trips abroad, and opportunities for students to obtain PET and FCE international certifications.
  • Focus on Science: While maintaining its humanistic focus, the Liceo Classico also provides ample instruction in mathematics and offers courses for students interested in pursuing scientific fields at the university level.
  • Computer Literacy: A vertical computer literacy curriculum is implemented in the first two years, taught by school instructors.
  • Cultural Enrichment: Teachers of Latin, Greek, and art history engage students through site and museum visits. Internships are available in collaboration with the Archaeological Section of the State Museum, the State Archives and Library, and public broadcasting.
  • Field Trips: The Liceo Classico organizes study trips related to the curriculum, including visits to Rimini, Etruria, Rome, Campania, and Sicily.
  • Multidisciplinary Activities: The program offers modules on archaeology, readings and theatrical performances of classical texts, meetings and conferences (sometimes in collaboration with the University), and music history lessons in collaboration with the San Marino Music Institute.
