Sao Tome and Principe Ensino Secundário - Inglês (English)

This curriculum for English as a foreign language in Sao Tome and Principe's secondary schools (Ensino Secundário, 2nd Cycle - grades 10-12) was developed in July 2010 as part of the Escola+ Project, a collaboration with the Instituto Marques de Valle Flor. The curriculum emphasizes English's importance in international communication, science, and higher education. It focuses on developing communicative competence through interactive methodologies and student-centered learning, building upon prior knowledge and experiences.

The curriculum aims to develop students' linguistic, sociolinguistic, and discursive competencies, enabling them to communicate effectively in various social situations, understand and respect different cultures, and critically analyze information. It encourages learner autonomy, collaborative work, and the use of diverse resources, including technology.

10th Grade

  • A World of Many Languages: This unit explores the role of English in a multilingual world, focusing on communication and cultural exchange. Students reflect on their language learning experiences and discuss the importance of studying foreign languages. Grammatical content includes indefinite pronouns, verb tenses (present simple, present progressive, present perfect, past simple), and adverbs. (9 lessons)
  • The Technological World: This unit examines the impact of technology on society, focusing on changes in family, work, education, and relationships. Students explore various text types within this theme. Grammatical content includes partitive nouns, adjective formation (prefixes and suffixes), and prepositions expressing direction, organization, time, duration, frequency, benefit, mode, possession, inclusion/exclusion, agent, and similarity. (9 lessons)
  • Global Communication and the Media: This unit encourages critical thinking about the role of media in society, focusing on ethical aspects such as info-inclusion/exclusion and information manipulation. Students learn to question sources and manage information flow. Grammatical content includes noun formation (derivation and composition), reflexive pronouns, article omission, adverb formation, modal verbs, phrasal verbs, and conditional sentences (1st and 2nd conditional).   • Young People in the Global Era: This unit explores the world of young people, including their attitudes, values, dreams, and ambitions. It also addresses civic engagement and critical thinking. Grammatical content includes the indefinite article, prepositional phrases, prepositions of place, compound and complex sentences, the passive voice, and conditional sentences (1st, 2nd, and 3rd conditional). 11th Grade

  • Urban and Rural Life: This unit focuses on describing and comparing urban and rural life in Sao Tome and Principe, including lifestyles, advantages, and disadvantages. Grammatical content includes noun inflection, the genitive case, indefinite pronouns, quantifiers, possessive pronouns, and idiomatic expressions. (9 lessons)
  • The World Around Us: This unit addresses environmental issues, encouraging ecological awareness and responsible behavior. Students explore various text types related to environmental protection and sustainable development. Grammatical content includes noun formation, prepositional phrases, the gerund, and phonological aspects. (9 lessons)
  • The Consumer Society: This unit examines consumer habits and the mechanisms of consumer society, focusing on ethical issues related to advertising and marketing. Grammatical content includes the genitive case, partitive nouns, the definite article, the double comparative, conjunctions, and phonological aspects. (9 lessons)
  • The World of Work: This unit explores the world of work, including different professions, required skills, working conditions, and career paths. Grammatical content includes the indefinite article, adjective placement, adverbs of manner, time, and place, the infinitive without "to", and phonological aspects. (9 lessons)
  • One World - Human Rights: This unit focuses on social and political issues in Sao Tome and Principe, including equality, rights, and opportunities. Grammatical content includes adjective comparison (regular and irregular), prepositions of place, verb tenses (present progressive, past perfect), conditional sentences, and wishes. (9 lessons)
  • The Multicultural Society: This unit explores the diversity of English-speaking cultures, addressing issues of discrimination, intolerance, and social inclusion. Grammatical content includes adjective formation, adverb formation, prepositions, future tenses, and phonological aspects. (9 lessons)

12th Grade

  • Cultural and Racial Diversity: This unit examines cultural and ethnic diversity in Sao Tome and Principe, focusing on linguistic and ethnic differences, intercultural dialogue, and migration. Grammatical content includes noun inflection, adjective comparison, verb tenses, the passive voice, and prosody. (9 lessons)
  • Politics and Democracy: This unit explores the political system of Sao Tome and Principe, comparing different political systems and forms of democratic participation.   • Publicity and Marketing: This unit analyzes the role of advertising and marketing, focusing on their impact on youth culture and consumer behavior. Grammatical content includes verb tenses, the gerund, the genitive case, conjunctions, and prosody. (9 lessons)
  • Art and Creativity: This unit explores various forms of art in Sao Tome and Principe, including visual and performing arts. Students learn about prominent Santomean artists and cultural events.   • Peace and Stability: This unit explores the historical development of Sao Tome and Principe, comparing past and present society, and addressing civic participation and fundamental rights.
