Sao Tome and Principe 9th Grade Curriculum - English Language
Secondary Education Curriculum Revision (2013)
In 2013, Sao Tome and Principe underwent a significant revision of its secondary education curriculum. The key aims were to better align the education system with the country's development needs and address the lack of skilled human resources. The Escola+ project played a central role in this revision.
Key changes introduced by the 2013 revision included:
- Extension of Secondary Education: The addition of a 12th grade expanded the scope of secondary education.
- Diversification of Learning Pathways: Two distinct pathways were established: general education and vocational education (1st cycle) and a professionally qualifying pathway (2nd cycle).
- Enhanced Practical Component: New workshops and indoor sports centers were planned to strengthen practical learning in subjects like Sports, Visual Education, Arts, and Workshops.
- Introduction of Vocational Courses: Professionally qualifying courses were introduced in areas such as Management and Administration/Accounting, Computer Sciences, Industrial Technologies, and Sports, with a new course in Tourism and Communication launched in 2013. These courses aimed to provide students with qualifications relevant to the country's economic needs.
- Curriculum Updates and Resources: The curricula for various subjects were updated, and new textbooks were made available to support teaching and learning.
- Teacher Training: A participatory approach involved Sao Tomean teachers in the revision process. Training programs, supported by Portuguese educators, focused on skill development, increasing confidence and motivation, and facilitating career advancement. A dedicated Centre for Training and Resources, "Ke Mese," was also established.
- School Management and Administration: Schools were given greater autonomy through training in school management and administration. Support was provided for the creation of school management mechanisms, such as student pedagogical boards.
