Sao Tome and Principe 4th Year Primary School Curriculum - Portuguese Language

The Portuguese Language curriculum for 4th Year Primary School in Sao Tome and Principe (Ensino básico, 4ª Classe) is assessed as part of the mandatory national exam, Examen National de Fin de 4e Année. This exam certifies completion of primary education and is a prerequisite for entering lower-secondary education. The exam includes both written and oral components, aligned with the national curriculum.

The Portuguese Language portion of the exam is 120 minutes long and is worth a total of 100 points. The oral component is worth 25 points, while the written component is worth 75 points. The written component includes multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and essay writing, using both continuous and mixed stimuli. Student performance is reported based on the percentage of correct answers. A score of 50% is required to meet the national standard.

In order to be promoted to the next grade, students must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Score more than 50 points in each subject (Portuguese Language, Mathematics, and Physical and Social Environment).
  • Score more than 50 points in two subjects and at least 35 points in the third subject.
