Saudi Arabia Grade 10 Business Studies Curriculum
This course provides a foundation in business principles and practices. It covers a range of topics related to the business world, from the micro environment of a single business to the larger macro environment that influences all businesses. The curriculum emphasizes practical application and problem-solving skills.
Term 1: Understanding the Business Environment
- The Micro Environment: This section focuses on the internal factors that influence a business. Students learn about the eight business functions (general management, purchasing, production, marketing, public relations, human resources, administration, and finance) and how they interact. Other key concepts include vision and mission statements, organizational culture, resource management, and the importance of quality in all aspects of business. Students also explore different levels of management and their respective roles and responsibilities.
- The Market Environment: This section examines the external factors that directly impact a business's ability to operate. Students learn about the importance of understanding customers and their needs, as well as the roles of suppliers, intermediaries, and competitors. The curriculum also covers the concept of civil society and its influence on business.
- The Macro Environment: This section explores the larger forces that shape the business landscape. Students learn about the physical/natural environment, economic conditions, social and cultural trends, technological advancements, legal and political regulations, and the international context. They also examine the institutional environment and its role in business operations.
- Interrelationship of Environments: This section emphasizes the interconnectedness of the micro, market, and macro environments. Students learn how changes in one environment can affect the others and how businesses can adapt to these changes.
- Business Sectors: This section introduces the different sectors of the economy (primary, secondary, and tertiary) and the distinctions between formal and informal, and public and private sectors. Students learn how businesses are classified and the characteristics of each sector.
Term 2: Contemporary Issues and Entrepreneurship
- Contemporary Socio-Economic Issues: This section addresses current challenges facing businesses and society, including poverty, inequality, inclusivity, unemployment, HIV/AIDS, piracy, counterfeiting, gambling, violence, crime, labor disputes, and political disturbances. Students learn how these issues impact business operations and the broader community.
- Social Responsibility: This section explores the ethical and social obligations of businesses. Students learn about corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the different ways businesses can contribute to society.
- Entrepreneurial Qualities: This section focuses on the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Students learn about the importance of opportunity seeking, commitment, perseverance, risk-taking, vision, flexibility, responsibility, leadership, confidence, energy, passion, organizational skills, and the ability to overcome obstacles.
- Forms of Ownership: This section examines the different legal structures for businesses, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, close corporations, non-profit companies, profit companies (private, personal liability, public, state-owned), and cooperatives. Students learn about the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of each form.
Term 3: Business Opportunities and Operations
- Creative Thinking and Problem-Solving: This section emphasizes the importance of creativity and innovation in business. Students learn about different problem-solving techniques, such as force-field analysis, brainstorming, and the SCAMPER method. They also explore the concept of indigenous knowledge and its application to business.
- Business Opportunities: This section focuses on identifying and evaluating business opportunities. Students learn about market research, SWOT analysis, and the importance of understanding customer needs and desires.
- Business Location Decisions: This section examines the factors that influence where businesses choose to locate. Students learn about labor regulations, environmental factors, transportation, infrastructure, potential markets, raw materials, labor markets, climate, government regulations and taxes, competition, and crime.
- Contracts: This section introduces the legal aspects of business agreements. Students learn about different types of contracts, the elements of a valid contract, and the implications of breach of contract.
- Presentation of Business Information: This section focuses on effective communication in business. Students learn how to develop and deliver presentations, including the use of audio-visual aids and other support materials.
- Business Plan: This section culminates in the development of a comprehensive business plan. Students learn about the different components of a business plan, including the executive summary, description of the business, SWOT analysis, marketing plan, competitive analysis, and financial projections.
Term 4: Self-Management and Teamwork
- Self-Management: This section focuses on personal development and professional skills. Students learn about time management, goal setting, self-knowledge, stress management, adaptability, and developing a professional image.
- Relationships and Team Performance: This section emphasizes the importance of teamwork in business. Students learn about understanding business objectives, interpersonal relationships, personal beliefs and values, and the keys to successful teamwork.
