Overview

The Grade 5 English curriculum in Saudi Arabia focuses on developing communicative competence in English. Students are expected to achieve a basic user (A1) level of proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This involves understanding and using familiar everyday expressions, introducing themselves and others, asking and answering simple questions, and interacting in basic ways. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Learning Objectives

By the end of Grade 5, students should be able to:

  • Listening: Differentiate between the pronunciation of similar sounds, understand the main idea and basic information in short dialogues, recognize simple intonation patterns, understand simple questions and instructions, and appreciate basic rhymes.
  • Speaking: Use formulaic language for basic communication, ask simple questions, respond to simple questions, produce short simple sentences, and link ideas with simple connectors.
  • Reading: Follow short simple texts while listening to audio, recognize basic punctuation rules, understand short simple sentences and texts with visual support, and understand the main idea in short simple texts.
  • Writing: Spell accurately high-frequency words, write high-frequency words and short simple phrases to complete sentences, write short simple words/phrases to complete a paragraph, apply basic punctuation rules, write short simple sentences to convey basic personal information, and link ideas with simple connectors.

The Grade 5 curriculum covers a range of topics and vocabulary, expanding upon what was learned in Grade 4. Students are expected to develop a vocabulary of approximately 500 words. Topics include:
