Saudi Arabia Grade 9 English Language Curriculum

This curriculum outlines the learning objectives, topics, and skills for English language instruction in Grade 9 in Saudi Arabia. It aims to develop students' communicative competence in English, enabling them to interact effectively in various social, academic, and professional contexts. The curriculum is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and targets an A2.2/B1.1 proficiency level by the end of Grade 9.

Curriculum Goals

The curriculum aims to enable students to:

  • Explain the tenets of Islam to promote international understanding and tolerance.
  • Advocate for and participate in spreading Islam.
  • Promote mutual cultural understanding and respect among nations.
  • Enhance cognitive and problem-solving skills for academic and professional advancement.

Grade 9 Objectives (A2.2 / B1.1)

By the end of Grade 9, students are expected to:

  • Listening: Differentiate between similar sounds, understand the main idea and specific information in dialogues and monologues, recognize intonation patterns, understand factual information, follow short talks and detailed directions.
  • Speaking: Use varied vocabulary and structures for everyday communication, manage less routine situations, establish social contact, give and follow instructions, initiate and maintain conversations, link ideas with connectors, ask for clarification, give reasons for opinions and actions, produce coherent speech describing experiences, expressing opinions, and responding to feelings.
  • Reading: Understand the main idea and specific information in factual texts, understand descriptions in letters/emails, find relevant information in everyday material, understand sequence and text cohesion, guess the meaning of unknown words, and make inferences.
  • Writing: Write connected texts on familiar topics, apply appropriate writing conventions (paragraphing, purpose, audience, cohesion, coherence), write notes and messages, write informal letters and emails (giving news, inviting, describing experiences), write accounts of events, narrate stories, write short essays, and write descriptions of people, places, and events.

Topics and Vocabulary

The curriculum covers a range of topics relevant to students' lives and interests, including:

  • Numbers, Education/School, People, Colours, The World, Work, Time, Sports, My Life, Animals, Homes and Houses, Food, Special Days, Holidays, Science and Technology, Health, and The Arts.

The vocabulary expands upon previous years, targeting approximately 2200 words by the end of Grade 9. Topics relevant to Saudi and Islamic culture are also integrated.

Functions and Language Exponents

Grade 9 focuses on developing specific language functions, such as making comparisons, discussing past habits, defining people and things, expressing conditions and results, referring to number and quantity, discussing routines and activities, discussing future plans, giving instructions, talking about experiences, describing feelings, narrating past events, expressing opinions and agreement/disagreement, making requests and offers, expressing obligation and prohibition, asking for and giving permission, making deductions, stressing actions, asking for and giving information, reporting commands and requests, expressing possibility and ability, expressing purpose, inviting and making arrangements, asking for and giving advice, and discussing a range of familiar topics. Specific language exponents (phrases, grammatical structures) are taught for each function.

Grammar Syllabus

The grammar syllabus for Grade 9 builds upon previous years and includes:

some/any/no/every and their compounds, the article the, comparative and superlative forms, present simple and progressive, past simple and progressive, present perfect simple, conditional sentences, time clauses, relative pronouns, passive voice, question forms, past perfect simple, reported speech, modal verbs, reflexive pronouns, clauses of result, all/both/neither/none/either*, prepositions, infinitives, -ing forms, future will, intensifiers, and conjunctions.

This curriculum provides a framework for English language instruction in Grade 9, focusing on developing communicative competence through integrated skills development, vocabulary expansion, and grammar instruction within relevant and engaging contexts.
