Senegal CM2 Curriculum - French
The CM2 (Cours Moyen 2ème année) is the final year of primary school in Senegal, equivalent to the 5th grade. The Senegalese education system is heavily influenced by the French system, with French being the primary language of instruction. Students in CM2 are typically 10 years old. While efforts have been made to incorporate more Senegalese elements into the curriculum, French remains dominant.
Key Learning Areas:
The core subjects in CM2 include French, mathematics, and science. Additional subjects include reading, geography, health, and hygiene. Some programs also incorporate instruction in maternal languages and religious education.
French Language Learning:
In CM2, French language learning focuses on developing comprehensive communication skills, both oral and written. Students learn to recount facts, describe, justify answers, create stories, summarize, and write poetry, while adhering to proper composition and grammar rules. Textbooks such as "Français Sénégal CM2 Langue et communication 3e étape Elève" and "L'excellence en langue et communication CM1-CM2" are used. Assessment in French for CM2 students reveals varying levels of proficiency, with a significant portion performing below the minimum expected level.
Challenges and Initiatives:
Despite the emphasis on French language instruction, challenges remain in ensuring quality education and foundational learning in Senegal. Various initiatives and programs have been implemented to address these challenges, including bilingual programs incorporating national languages like Wolof and Pulaar, and programs focused on improving reading skills. The Ministry of National Education is responsible for learning assessments and curriculum development. |
