Serbia First Grade Music Curriculum

Music education in Serbian primary schools is compulsory from the first grade and continues until the eighth grade. In the first four grades, music is taught by general classroom teachers, while specialist music teachers take over from the fifth grade onwards.

First-grade students have one 45-minute music class per week, designated as "Music Culture". In the first two grades, the curriculum emphasizes singing by ear, listening to diverse genres of music, and musical games. The use of Orff instruments is also incorporated throughout the primary grades. The curriculum aims to develop an appreciation for both Serbian and international music traditions, composers, and instruments. Basic music theory is introduced to support musical performance.

In addition to the compulsory music classes, schools may offer elective music activities such as choir (for musically talented students) and orchestra (for all students). Traditional Serbian folk music plays a role in music education, helping children connect with their cultural heritage and fostering creativity.
