Seychelles Primary Education System
The Seychelles education system provides free and compulsory education from ages 6 to 15. The primary school cycle (P1-P6) spans six years, starting at age 6. Lower secondary education lasts three years, and upper secondary education lasts four years.
Role of Creole in Primary Education
Seychellois Creole (Kreol Seselwa) plays a significant role in the early years of primary education. It serves as the primary language of instruction from ages 6 to 10 (P1-P4). After P4, English is gradually introduced as the language of instruction, and French is introduced as a foreign language. Creole is the mother tongue of the majority of Seychellois. While Creole is used in the early grades, the official languages of Seychelles are Creole, English, and French.
Curriculum
The Seychelles National Curriculum Framework guides all state schools. The primary school curriculum emphasizes core subjects like English, Math, and Science, along with other selected subjects. More information on the curriculum can be found on the Ministry of Education website. |
