Seychelles Primary 1 Curriculum - English

The Seychelles Primary 1 English curriculum aims to develop foundational literacy skills in young learners. It focuses on listening, speaking, reading, and writing, enabling students to communicate effectively and build a strong base for future language development. The curriculum emphasizes phonics, vocabulary building, and the use of basic grammar and punctuation.

Listening

Students are expected to develop their listening skills by following instructions, identifying changes in tone, and responding appropriately to simple texts and directions. They also learn to listen without interrupting, take turns speaking, and ask questions for clarification. Activities like identifying rhyming words in songs and rhymes further enhance their auditory skills.

Speaking

The speaking component of the curriculum encourages students to express greetings and emotions, participate in discussions, and follow oral directions. They learn to ask simple questions using question words (what, where, when, who, how) and provide short answers. Reciting simple rhymes, poems, or songs helps them develop confidence and clear enunciation. They also practice using polite words like "Thank you," "Sorry," and "Please."

Reading

Reading skills are developed through recognizing and naming the alphabet, distinguishing between consonants and vowels, and applying phonic knowledge to decode words. Students learn about the parts of a book and understand that words are made up of sequences of sounds. They practice reading aloud with guidance and develop fluency and expression. They also learn to read common sight words related to greetings, signs, and classroom objects.

Writing

The writing curriculum introduces students to basic grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. They learn to write their names and simple words and phrases. The focus is on developing legible handwriting and using basic punctuation marks like full stops, capital letters, question marks, and commas in simple sentences.
