Sierra Leone Primary Class 2 Syllabus - Mathematics

This syllabus outlines the learning outcomes, assessment methods, teaching styles, and resources for Primary Class 2 Mathematics in Sierra Leone. It emphasizes a learner-centered approach, active learning settings, and the use of concrete, pictorial, and abstract (CPA) methods.

Number and Numeration:

  • Counting: Students will count to 1000 forwards and backward from any two- or three-digit number; count from 0 in multiples of 2, 4, 5, and 10. They will also identify, read, write, compare, and order whole numbers up to 1000, locating them on a number line. Place value will be extended to 1000, and odd and even numbers will be recognized. Students will use models and pictorial representations to describe unit and non-unit fractions with denominators up to 10.
  • Fractions: Students will identify halves and quarters using pictures and create stories involving these fractions. They will also identify unit fractions with denominators 2, 4, and 8 using pictorial representations, as well as those with denominators 3, 6, and 9, and 5 and 10. Non-unit fractions for denominators 2-10 will also be covered.

Everyday Arithmetic (Including Financial Literacy):

  • Addition and Subtraction: Students will recall and use addition and subtraction facts up to 20, deriving facts to 100. They will identify and use the associative and commutative laws for addition. Using models, pictorial representations, mental and written strategies, they will add and subtract up to 1000 with two- and three-digit numbers, including one-step word problems.
  • Multiplication and Division: Students will recognize and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 4, 5, and 10 multiplication tables. They will also recognize and use the associative and commutative laws for multiplication, and recognize division as the inverse of multiplication. Mental and informal written strategies will be used for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables, including one-step word problems.
  • Financial Literacy: Students will count and solve simple word problems involving the national currency (Leone) using addition and subtraction.

Measurement and Estimation:

  • Length, Time, Mass, Volume/Capacity: Students will review and extend everyday language for length, time, area, mass, and volume/capacity. They will use non-standard units to estimate, measure, compare, and order these quantities, solving simple word problems. Time will be told and drawn on a 12-hour clock face to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour. Students will learn the relationships between seconds, minutes, hours, and days.

Geometry:

  • 2D and 3D Shapes: Students will identify, name, describe, and sort simple two- and three-dimensional shapes according to their properties. They will also explore circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles, learning to identify and draw them.

Algebra:

  • Number Patterns: Students will identify and describe simple number patterns involving the four mathematical operations. They will also determine the rule in the number pattern. This includes recognizing and making repeated patterns in pictures and using sound. They will also draw patterns for number sequences that involve addition.

Statistics and Probability:

  • Data Collection: Students will collect, organize, display, and extract simple discrete data using pictograms and lists. They will also make a plan for data collection, put the plan into action, create tally charts, and develop tally charts based on answers to questions. They will also learn to create and present bar charts.

Basic Computing Skills:

  • ICT Tools: Students will use general ICT tools (e.g., spreadsheets, videos) to illustrate mathematical concepts and use computer games and other mathematics teaching software to introduce, practice, and consolidate concepts.
