Theme 1: The Child and His or Her Home Environment

Pupils will learn to describe their physical environment, explain changes observed, and suggest ways of preventing or controlling these changes. The unit also introduces the concept of wildlife and community conservation, highlighting the role of Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
  • Theme 2: Movement and Physical Development (Personal Hygiene): This unit emphasizes personal hygiene. Pupils will learn about the importance of personal hygiene, identify body parts that need regular cleaning, and demonstrate proper hygiene practices for hands, teeth, body, hair, clothes, and underwear.

Theme 3: Nutrition and Health

  • Unit 1: Food: This unit introduces pupils to different types of food. Pupils will identify and classify local foods, discuss their choices, and learn about foods grown in their community.
  • Unit 2: Community Health: This unit focuses on community health and sanitation. Pupils will identify materials used for cleaning, explain the importance of clean compounds, demonstrate cleaning methods, and discuss the consequences of living in dirty environments. They will also explore ways to maintain good health.

Theme 4: The Earth, Sea, Land, Stars, and Moon

This unit introduces pupils to basic concepts about the Earth and its surroundings. Pupils will learn to identify and name the earth, sea, land, stars, and moon. They will also learn about habitats, animals that live with people, and the threats facing Sierra Leone's national animal, the chimpanzee. Additionally, they will explore the concept of the earth's shape and its relationship to the sun.

Theme 5: The Human Body & Development

  • Unit 1: Bodies: Similarities and Differences: This unit explores the human body, focusing on similarities and differences between individuals. It emphasizes respect for all bodies and discusses the unique nature of each person. The unit also touches on the concept of body parts and appropriate terminology. It draws comparisons between chimpanzees and humans, highlighting similarities and differences.
  • Unit 2: Puberty and Changes: This unit introduces the concept of puberty and the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive changes associated with it. It acknowledges the challenges of puberty and promotes respect and understanding for others going through this stage. The unit also differentiates between sex and gender, discusses gender stereotypes, and emphasizes gender equality.

This comprehensive syllabus provides a foundation for scientific learning in Primary Class 2, covering various aspects of the natural world, personal health, and the human body.
