Sierra Leone JSS3 Social Studies

This course covers a range of topics designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for responsible citizenship and participation in society. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, drawing on various disciplines like history, geography, politics, economics, and population studies.

Term 1

Unit 1: Evolution, Overpopulation, and Humanity's Struggle for Existence

This unit explores the origin and development of humankind, including Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Students will examine how human qualities have contributed to our survival and analyze the impact of overpopulation on quality of life and resource availability. The unit also addresses the importance of law and order in society, the causes and effects of corruption, and Sierra Leone's judicial system.

Unit 2: Ecosystems and Environmental Management

This unit focuses on the components of ecosystems and the interrelationships between different elements. Students will study a local ecosystem, exploring the impact of human activities and the importance of environmental management. Topics such as pollution, conservation methods, and the age/sex structure of the Sierra Leone population will also be covered.

Unit 3: Culture, Socialization, and Education

This unit examines Sierra Leonean culture, the process of socialization, and the educational system. Students will discuss cultural heritage, agents of socialization, and the benefits of education for individuals and society. The unit also addresses the employment situation in Sierra Leone, the role of social institutions in decision-making, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Term 2

Unit 4: Population and the Conservation of Resources

This unit focuses on resource management, conservation, and the impact of population growth. Students will learn about renewable and non-renewable resources, pollution control, and the age/sex structure of the Sierra Leone population. The unit also addresses rural-urban migration, population planning, youth empowerment, and the role of NGOs in development.

Unit 5: Transportation Systems

This unit explores the development of transportation by land, water, and air, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each system. Students will examine the impact of transportation on communication and population change, as well as Sierra Leone's relationship with regional and global organizations.

Unit 6: Youth and Social Problems

This unit addresses the challenges faced by young people, including peer pressure, sexually transmitted diseases, and social problems. Students will discuss assertive behavior, prevention strategies, and the role of institutions that support youth welfare. The unit also covers human rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and Sierra Leone's human rights record.
