Sierra Leone Junior Secondary School (JSS) Syllabus - Mathematics

The Sierra Leone Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) provides resources for JSS Mathematics, including lesson plans, pupil handbooks, and syllabi. The curriculum aims to improve mathematics teaching and learning and enhance performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Resources are available online through the MBSSE website and the SL Education Knowledge Platform.

JSS Mathematics is divided into three levels:

  • JSS 1: Covers fundamental concepts such as the base ten number system, place value, powers of ten, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Resources include lesson plans for each term, pupil handbooks, and practice activities.
  • JSS 2: Builds upon JSS 1 topics and introduces more complex concepts such as standard form, fractions, transactions in the home and office, approximation, and geometry. Resources include lesson plans, pupil handbooks, and practice activities.
  • JSS 3: Focuses on preparing students for the BECE and covers topics such as binary operations, rational and irrational numbers, binary numbers, algebra, geometry, and statistics. Resources include lesson plans, pupil handbooks, and past BECE papers.

A summary of topic alignment between JSS 2 and JSS 3 is available to aid revision and preparation for JSS 3.
