Singapore JC Subject List - H3 Physics
Course Overview
H3 Physics is designed for students with a strong aptitude and passion for physics who wish to delve deeper into the subject. It builds upon the H2 Physics syllabus, providing a more rigorous and in-depth exploration of advanced topics. Students are expected to handle complex problem-solving and demonstrate a higher level of mathematical proficiency.
Syllabus Content
The H3 Physics syllabus expands on two main sections of the H2 Physics syllabus:
Newtonian Mechanics
- Inertial Frames (Non-Relativistic): This topic explores the concept of inertial frames of reference and their application in analyzing non-relativistic dynamics. Students learn about Galilean transformation equations and the center of mass frame.
- Rotational Motion: Building on linear motion and circular motion, this section covers the rotational dynamics of classical objects around a fixed axis. Key concepts include angular displacement, velocity, acceleration, momentum, moment of inertia, and torque.
- Planetary and Satellite Motion: This topic delves into the motion of planets and satellites in elliptical orbits, focusing on Kepler's laws, gravitational potential energy, orbital transfers, and the effective radial potential.
Electricity and Magnetism
- Electric and Magnetic Fields: Expanding on Coulomb's law and uniform electric fields, this section explores continuous charge distributions in conductors and insulators. It also covers Gauss's law, Ampere's law, and electric and magnetic dipoles.
- Capacitors and Inductors: This topic covers capacitance, inductance, dielectrics, ferromagnetic materials, energy storage in capacitors and inductors, and circuits involving these components.
Assessment
The H3 Physics examination consists of a single 3-hour paper divided into two sections:
- Section A (60 marks): Compulsory structured questions, including a stimulus-based question.
- Section B (40 marks): Choice of two from three longer structured questions.
Additional Resources
- Past papers and notes are available online.
- Various textbooks are recommended for further learning.
