Singapore JC Subject List - French (H2)
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in French, encompassing linguistic competence, cultural understanding, and contemporary societal knowledge. Students will engage with a variety of authentic materials, including literary texts, news articles, and discussions, to enhance their communication skills and cultural awareness.
Curriculum
The H2 French curriculum explores various topic areas related to French-speaking countries and communities. These include:
- Human Relationships: Family dynamics, generation gap, youth issues.
- Daily Life: Urban and rural lifestyles, media influence, food and drink, law and order, religion and belief, health and fitness.
- Work and Leisure: Employment, unemployment, equality of opportunity, sports, free time activities, travel and tourism, education, cultural heritage.
- Global Issues: War and peace, developing world, scientific and medical advances, technological innovation, environment, pollution, conservation.
Assessment
The H2 French assessment comprises five components:
1. Speaking (20%): A presentation on a chosen topic related to the contemporary society or cultural heritage of a French-speaking country, followed by a topic conversation and a general conversation.
2. Reading and Writing (20%): Comprehension and analysis of two related French passages, including vocabulary, grammar, and summary/comparison tasks.
3. Essay (15%): A written essay in French on one of five pre-set topics within the curriculum's topic areas. The set topics for 2025 are Human Relationships, Religion and Belief, Work and Leisure, Education, and Conservation. These topics change annually.
4. Listening (20%): Comprehension of short factual items and extended spoken pieces, assessing understanding of details, overall meaning, and quality of language.
5. Coursework (25%): A substantial piece of written work in French (approximately 2000 words) based on research and personal interests within the topic areas, demonstrating in-depth study and critical analysis. |
