General Paper (H1)
The General Paper (H1) is a compulsory subject for students taking the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level examination. The syllabus was revised and implemented for the 2024 examination (Syllabus 8881), replacing the previous syllabus (8807). This revised syllabus aims to better equip students with critical thinking and communication skills.
Key Changes in the Revised Syllabus (8881)
- Reduced Number of Essay Questions and Topics: The revised syllabus features 8 essay questions in Paper 1, compared to 12 in the previous syllabus. This change reflects a more focused approach to topic coverage.
- Emphasis on Critical Reading and Evaluation: The revisions place greater emphasis on critical reading and the ability to evaluate the quality and validity of arguments.
Examination Format (8881)
- Paper 1: Essay (1 hour 30 minutes): Candidates choose one essay question out of the eight provided. The essay should be between 500 and 800 words and address issues of local and global concern across various disciplines. The questions draw on themes from various disciplines and address issues of both local and global significance.
