Singapore Secondary 2 English Language (G3)
This course aims to build a strong foundation in the English language and enrich language learning. It focuses on developing essential language skills, leveraging various resources, and exploring real-world issues. The curriculum incorporates differentiated instruction, authentic tasks, and ICT tools to enhance the learning experience.
Term 1
Themes: Teen, Mind and Body; Role Models
- Reading & Viewing: Using contextual clues to make predictions, scanning for specific information, making inferences, and summarizing essential ideas.
- Writing & Representing: Developing, organizing, and expressing ideas coherently, cohesively, creatively, and critically through script-writing and reflective essays.
- Listening & Viewing: Drawing on prior knowledge and contextual clues for comprehension, active listening and viewing to interpret texts, and comparing and contrasting information.
- Speaking & Representing: Developing and organizing ideas for speaking and representing through active discussion and summarizing ideas via the Speech & Drama Programme.
- Grammar & Vocabulary Focus: Editing practices, past progressive tense, relative clauses as postmodifiers, varied sentence structures and lengths for effect, and thematic vocabulary development.
Term 2
Themes: Teen Culture; Conflict
- Reading & Viewing: Similar skills as Term 1, focusing on comprehension of visual and narrative texts.
- Writing & Representing: Continuous writing (reflective essays) and situational writing (speeches).
- Listening & Viewing: Similar skills as Term 1.
- Speaking & Representing: Continued development through the Speech & Drama Programme.
- Grammar & Vocabulary Focus: Editing practices, present perfect tense, adverbs for emphasis and tone, connectors of reason, prepositions, and thematic vocabulary.
Term 3
Themes: Environment; Sports, Health & Fitness
- Reading & Viewing: Comprehension of visual, narrative, and factual texts.
- Writing & Representing: Continuous writing (hybrid essays) and situational writing (formal emails/letters).
- Listening & Viewing: Revision of skills from previous terms.
- Grammar & Vocabulary Focus: Editing practices, passive voice, connectors.
Term 4
- Reading & Viewing: Revision of comprehension skills.
- Writing & Representing: Revision of writing skills, including situational and continuous writing.
- Grammar Focus: Revision of grammar concepts and editing practices.
This curriculum also incorporates external programs and resources such as The Straits Times IN Reading Programme and Speech and Drama Workshop Series. Additional resources for vocabulary building are also available. Practice papers based on the latest exam format are available to help students prepare for examinations.
