Course Overview

The Malay Language (H1) syllabus aims to equip students with the ability to read functional texts, authentic texts, essays (with narrative, descriptive, argumentative, and expository writing elements), and literary works. Students will also learn to write comprehensive and coherent essays on given topics using appropriate vocabulary and diverse sentence structures. Furthermore, the syllabus emphasizes developing oral and written interaction skills to exchange views on general topics, connect various issues, and transfer understanding to different contexts.

Assessment Objectives

The H1 Malay Language examination assesses candidates' abilities to:

  • Listen and comprehend various oral texts, recalling details and identifying key ideas in diverse situations.
  • Speak fluently and clearly using standard pronunciation, expressing opinions and critical arguments for various purposes, audiences, and situations.
  • Interact orally with fluency and clarity using standard pronunciation.
  • Read and understand various print, non-print, and digital materials to acquire, process, and effectively convey information.
  • Write texts of diverse genres clearly and effectively.
  • Interact through writing clearly and effectively.

Examination Format

The H1 Malay Language examination consists of two papers:

Paper 1: Essay and Language Use, Comprehension, and Summary (70%)

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Part 1: Essay (30%) - Four questions, including one graphic stimulus question. Candidates write an essay of at least 380 words. Approved dictionaries are allowed.
  • Part 2: Language Use, Comprehension, and Summary (40%) - Four sections:
      • Section A: Proverbs (5%) - Five questions on identifying appropriate proverbs based on given situations.
      • Section B: Comprehension 1 (5%) - Five multiple-choice questions based on a given text.
      • Section C: Editing Text (10%) - Ten free-response questions on correcting misspelled words and replacing misused words.
      • Section D: Comprehension and Summary (20%) - Five free-response questions, including vocabulary and summary based on a given text. The summary should not exceed 50 words.

Paper 2: Oral and Listening Comprehension (30%)

  • Oral (10% + 15% = 25%):
      • Part 1: Oral Presentation (10%) - A two-minute presentation based on a given topic using a video stimulus. 10 minutes preparation time is provided.
      • Part 2: Discussion based on Oral Presentation (15%) - Discussion with the examiner based on the presentation.
  • Listening Comprehension (5%): Ten multiple-choice questions based on five authentic texts of various genres. Duration: approximately 30 minutes.

List of Proverbs

The syllabus includes a list of 40 proverbs that students are expected to understand and apply.
