This entry is based on the 2020 H2/H3 Mother Tongue Language & Literature syllabus, the closest available version to the 2021 syllabus.

Aims:

The H3 Malay Language and Literature syllabus aims to cultivate students into advocates for Asian literature and cultural transmitters. It seeks to deepen students' understanding of Malay language, culture, values, and ethos. Furthermore, it aims to develop students into critical and creative global thinkers with cross-cultural awareness. This aligns with the broader educational goals outlined in the Desired Outcomes of Education (DOE) and 21st Century Competencies framework.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Language:
      • Listening and Reading: Interpret and evaluate complex information in spoken and written texts, make inferences, and connect them to personal experiences.
      • Speaking and Spoken Interaction: Express and exchange well-structured viewpoints on diverse topics during discussions.
      • Writing: Utilize text-appropriate strategies to write clear, vivid, and well-structured narrative and argumentative essays.
      • Written Interaction: Comment on diverse topics and communicate viewpoints succinctly and accurately.
  • Literature:
      • Experiencing Texts: Immerse in and relate to various texts and reflect on personal experiences.
      • Appreciating Style: Understand literary elements in different genres and appreciate the aesthetic value of texts and language use.
      • Interpreting Theme: Analyze central ideas and issues across texts and explore their significance.
      • Connecting Self, Texts, and the World: Relate texts to their contexts and the world, reflecting on personal values and perspectives.
      • Communicating Responses: Conceptualize meaning through analysis, writing, and presenting viewpoints with justification and reasoning.
      • Creating Literary Works: Create original works with individual style and approach.
  • H3 Specific Learning Outcomes:
      • Depth in Writing: Write in-depth and well-structured essays.

21st Century Competencies Framework:

The syllabus aligns with the 21st Century Competencies (21CC) framework, focusing on:

  • Communication, Collaboration and Information Skills: Communicate effectively in Malay, drawing connections across issues and transferring understanding to multiple contexts.
  • Civic Literacy, Global Awareness and Cross-Cultural Skills: Develop national and cultural identity through appreciation of culture, tradition, literature, and history. Gain cross-cultural understanding through studying literature from other Malay communities.
  • Critical and Inventive Thinking Skills: Hone higher-order thinking skills by analyzing texts through multiple perspectives, thinking critically and creatively, and creating literary works based on personal insights and connections to heritage and the world.

Curriculum Time:

The recommended curriculum time for H3 Malay Language and Literature is 2 hours of classroom instruction and 2 hours of independent learning per week for a one-year course.

Independent learning involves:

  • Extension of Learning: Exploring recommended reading materials beyond the syllabus.
  • Application of Skills: Working on mini-projects, such as creating literary works or podcasts.
  • Participation in Activities: Participating in workshops, sharing sessions, and school-based or external activities related to Malay language and literature.

Content:

  • Syllabus Framework: The syllabus integrates language and literature skills through three broad themes: Relationship, Change, and Choice.
  • Language Component: Focuses on contemporary prose and authentic texts, emphasizing higher-order thinking skills in reading comprehension, essay writing, and written interaction.
  • Literature Component: Includes studying prescribed and unseen texts across different genres (Classical Prose, Poetry, Short Stories, Novel, Drama) to develop literary appreciation and writing skills.

Pedagogy:

The syllabus emphasizes the Singapore Teaching Practice (STP), integrating language skills and literary analysis, effective questioning, and the use of e-pedagogies.

Assessment:

Assessment is learner-centered and balanced, incorporating both Assessment for Learning (AfL) and Assessment of Learning (AoL). Summative assessment for H3 MTLL typically involves essay writing and literature analysis.
