Singapore JC Subject List - Geography (H1, Revised)
This course covers two main clusters: Sustainable Future and Climate Change, and Fieldwork. It aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values to understand and address contemporary geographical challenges.
Cluster 1: Sustainable Future and Climate Change
This cluster explores the complex relationship between human activities and the environment, focusing on sustainable development and climate change.
Topic 1.1: Cities in a Sustainable Future
This topic examines the challenges and opportunities of creating sustainable and liveable cities. Key themes include:
- Sustainable Urban Development: Understanding the concept of sustainable development, its three dimensions (economic, environmental, and social), and the potential trade-offs between them. The impact of urban population trends and the demand placed on natural environments by urban areas are also considered.
- Sustainable Cities: Exploring the importance of effective waste management, slum management, and urban reimaging for sustainable urban development. Students will analyze the varying success of strategies implemented in different locations.
- Liveable Cities: Investigating the factors that influence the liveability of a place and the relationship between sustainable urban development and liveability. The topic also addresses the specific challenges and strategies for creating liveable cities for the elderly and women.
Topic 1.2: The Future with Climate Change
This topic delves into the science of climate change, its potential effects, and possible responses. Key themes include:
- The Science of Climate Change: Examining past climate variability, the role of natural factors in contemporary climate change, and the significance of human activities in comparison. The enhanced greenhouse effect and feedback mechanisms are also explored.
- Possible Effects of Climate Change: Analyzing the impacts of climate change on humans, ecosystems, and specific places. The topic also considers the uneven distribution of impacts and the uncertainties associated with predicting future effects.
- Responses to Climate Change: Investigating mitigation and adaptation strategies, the roles of key actors (firms, NGOs, and states), and the challenges in implementing effective responses.
Cluster 2: Fieldwork
This cluster provides students with practical experience in geographical inquiry. Students will conduct fieldwork on one of the following topics:
- Community response to climate change
- Needs analysis of the elderly living in an urban neighbourhood
The fieldwork process involves the following stages:
- Pre-fieldwork: Crafting a geographical question or hypothesis, developing a research plan, and addressing ethical considerations and resource limitations.
- Fieldwork (Data Collection): Collecting primary and secondary data using appropriate methods, including geospatial technologies.
- Post-fieldwork: Presenting and analyzing data using appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods, drawing conclusions, and evaluating the validity of the fieldwork.
