H2 Literature in English

H2 Literature in English is a subject offered at the Junior College level (JC) in Singapore. It aims to develop students' critical thinking skills and ability to analyze literary texts with discernment, fostering an appreciation for the complexities of language, form, and meaning. Students engage in close reading of both seen and unseen texts, exploring literary techniques and their effects, and developing interpretations supported by textual evidence.

Syllabus and Assessment

The H2 Literature in English syllabus typically covers a range of literary genres and periods, including pre-20th-century works, encouraging students to deepen their understanding of literary texts of enduring significance. Specific texts studied can vary between JCs. For example, some JCs might include texts like Hamlet, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Other texts mentioned include Wide Sargasso Sea, Remembering Babylon, Hard Times, and An Enemy of the People. Students are expected to analyze the stylistic and literary features of texts in their discussions.

Assessment for H2 Literature generally involves two 3-hour examinations. H2 students take both Paper 1 ("Reading Literature") and Paper 3, while H1 students only take Paper 1. Paper 1 is open-book.

Learning Resources

Various learning resources are available for H2 Literature students, including textbooks, study guides, and online platforms. Some websites offer notes and resources specifically designed for the A-Level H2 Literature syllabus. Students can also find free notes and summaries on platforms like SmartGuppy. Past papers and practice questions are also valuable resources for exam preparation.
