Singapore Primary 6 School Syllabus - English Language (Standard Level)

This syllabus aims to develop students' proficiency in English, preparing them for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). It focuses on six key areas: Listening and Viewing, Reading and Viewing, Speaking and Representing, Writing, Grammar, and Vocabulary.

PSLE English Format

The PSLE English examination consists of four papers:

  • Paper 1: Writing (55 marks) This paper has two sections:
      • Situational Writing (14 marks): Students write a short functional piece, such as a letter or email, based on a given situation.
      • Continuous Writing (40 marks): Students write a composition of at least 150 words on a given topic, often with accompanying pictures.
  • Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension (95 marks) This paper assesses grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and synthesis skills through various question types, including multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions.
  • Paper 3: Listening Comprehension (20 marks) This paper tests students' ability to understand spoken English through various audio texts.
  • Paper 4: Oral Communication (30 marks) This paper assesses students' speaking skills through reading aloud and stimulus-based conversation.
