Singapore Primary 6 Malay Language (Standard Level)
This syllabus aims to assess the student's achievement and proficiency in the Malay language based on the 2015 Primary School Malay Language Curriculum objectives set by the Ministry of Education. The PSLE Malay Language examination evaluates the candidate's ability to:
- Listening Comprehension: Understand various conversations or spoken texts and demonstrate comprehension of the material heard. Identify main ideas, recall key details, and interpret implied meanings in spoken texts.
- Reading Aloud: Read passages fluently with correct pronunciation, clear articulation, and appropriate expression using standard pronunciation.
- Oral Communication: Explain or interpret main ideas clearly based on stimuli (e.g., video clips or topics) and provide opinions coherently and appropriately when interacting with the examiner. Interact orally fluently and clearly using standard pronunciation for various purposes, audiences, and situations.
- Reading Comprehension: Read and respond to various texts appropriate for the level and be able to:
- Infer word meanings based on contextual clues.
- Identify specific information and main ideas in texts.
- Compare and classify information in texts.
- Proverbs: Use proverbs in appropriate contexts.
- Grammar: Use affixes, lexical and syntactic structures in given contexts.
- Composition: Write concise narrative essays based on pictures or other requirements with a minimum of 150 words, expressing feelings effectively.
- Written Interaction: Interact through writing clearly and effectively for various purposes, audiences, and situations.
Examination Format
The PSLE Malay Language examination consists of three papers:
- Paper 1: Composition (40 marks, 20% weightage, 50 minutes): Two questions are presented, requiring the candidate to answer one by writing an essay of at least 150 words. The first question is based on a given topic, while the second is based on a series of pictures. Approved dictionaries are allowed.
- Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension (90 marks, 45% weightage, 1 hour 40 minutes): This paper has four sections:
- Section A: Language Use (MCQ) (40 marks, 20%): Includes questions on affixes, proverbs, and parts of speech.
- Section B: Comprehension 1 (MCQ) (10 marks, 5%): Based on an expository text.
- Section C: Phrases (Fill in the Blanks) (8 marks, 4%): Based on a dialogue.
- Section D: Comprehension 2 (MCQ, Free Response) (32 marks, 16%): Based on two texts, one authentic material (e.g., advertisement, brochure) and one narrative text.
- Paper 3: Oral and Listening Comprehension (70 marks, 35% weightage, 45 minutes): This paper has two components:
- Oral (50 marks, 25%): Consists of reading aloud a passage displayed on a computer screen and engaging in a conversation with the examiner based on a short video clip. Preparation time of 10 minutes is provided.
- Listening Comprehension (MCQ) (20 marks, 10%): Based on various authentic texts of different genres (e.g., articles, advertisements, announcements, short stories).
