Singapore Primary 6 School Syllabus - Mathematics (Foundation Level)

This syllabus covers fundamental mathematical concepts for Primary 6 students in Singapore. It prepares students for the PSLE Foundation Mathematics examination and emphasizes practical application of math in everyday life. The syllabus is divided into three main categories:

1. Numbers and Algebra:

  • Whole Numbers: This topic reinforces the understanding of whole numbers, their operations, and properties.
  • Fractions: Students learn about different types of fractions, equivalent fractions, operations with fractions, and problem-solving involving fractions.
  • Decimals: This topic covers decimal representation, place value, operations with decimals, and conversion between fractions and decimals.
  • Percentage: Students learn about percentage as a fraction out of 100, converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and solving percentage problems.
  • Ratio: This topic introduces the concept of ratio, equivalent ratios, and problem-solving using ratios.
  • Speed: Students learn about speed as a rate, calculating speed, distance, and time, and solving speed-related problems.
  • Algebra: This topic introduces basic algebraic concepts, including variables, expressions, and simple equations.

2. Measurement and Geometry:

  • Measurement: This topic covers measurement of length, mass, volume, and time, using appropriate units and instruments.
  • 2D Shapes: Students learn about properties of 2D shapes, including triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles.
  • 3D Shapes: This topic covers properties of 3D shapes, including cubes, cuboids, and cylinders.
  • Angles: Students learn about measuring and classifying angles, including acute, obtuse, and right angles.
  • Area and Circumference of Circle: Students learn how to calculate the area and circumference of circles.
  • Volume: Students learn how to calculate the volume of cubes and cuboids.

3. Statistics:

  • Data Analysis: This topic covers collecting, organizing, representing, and interpreting data using tables, charts, and graphs.
  • Average: Students learn how to calculate the average of a set of numbers.

PSLE Foundation Mathematics Examination:

The PSLE Foundation Mathematics examination assesses students' understanding of the topics covered in the syllabus. The examination consists of two papers:

  • Paper 1: Consists of two booklets (A and B) with multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Calculators are not allowed.
  • Paper 2: Consists of open-ended questions requiring problem-solving and application of mathematical concepts. Calculators are allowed.

This syllabus aims to equip students with a strong foundation in mathematics, enabling them to apply mathematical concepts in various contexts and preparing them for further studies.
