Singapore Primary 6 Tamil Language (Standard Level)

This course aims to equip students with a strong foundation in the Tamil language, encompassing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The curriculum emphasizes the practical application of these skills in various contexts, preparing students for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).

Curriculum Components

The Primary 6 Tamil Language syllabus focuses on four key components:

  • Listening Comprehension: Students develop their ability to understand spoken Tamil, including identifying key information, inferring meaning, and analyzing different types of spoken texts.
  • Oral Communication: This component emphasizes effective communication in Tamil, including pronunciation, fluency, and the appropriate use of grammar and vocabulary in conversations and presentations.
  • Reading Comprehension: Students enhance their reading skills by interpreting various texts, identifying main ideas, inferring meaning, and analyzing the author's purpose and style.
  • Composition Writing: This component focuses on developing writing skills, including grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and the ability to express ideas clearly and effectively in different writing formats.

PSLE Tamil Examination Format and Weighting

The PSLE Tamil Language examination assesses students' proficiency in the four components mentioned above. The examination format consists of four papers:

  • Paper 1: Composition Writing (20%): This paper assesses the student's ability to write compositions in various formats, such as essays, stories, and letters.
  • Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension (45%): This paper tests the student's understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills through various question types, including multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions.
  • Paper 3: Listening Comprehension (10%): This paper assesses the student's ability to understand spoken Tamil through various audio recordings.
  • Paper 4: Oral Communication (25%): This component evaluates the student's ability to communicate effectively in Tamil through conversations and presentations, often using video stimuli.
