Singapore Primary School Art Syllabus

The Singapore Primary School Art syllabus aims to develop students as active artists and informed audiences. Key updates to the syllabus were implemented for the 2024 academic year.

Key Features of the Syllabus

  • Focus: Enjoying art, communicating visually, and making meaning through connections with society and culture.
  • Structure: The syllabus is organized around three Learning Domains: See (observe and inquire), Express (create and innovate), and Appreciate (connect and respond). These domains are further developed through four key components: Context, Artistic Processes, Visual Qualities, and Media.
  • Big Ideas: Three central concepts underpin the curriculum:
      • Art helps us to see in new ways.
      • Art tells stories about our world.
      • Art influences how we live.
  • Learning Outcomes: Specific learning outcomes are defined for each Key Stage (Primary 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6). These outcomes detail the knowledge, skills, and values students should acquire at each stage.
  • Core Learning Experiences: Three core learning experiences are emphasized:
      • Drawing (Primary 1-6): Drawing is considered foundational and is explored throughout the primary years. A blended learning approach, utilizing online resources and classroom activities, is employed.
      • Museum-Based Learning (Primary 4): A museum visit provides an authentic context for learning about local art and its connection to Singapore's history and heritage.
      • Exhibition in Curriculum (Primary 1-6): Students participate in exhibitions at the classroom, school, and community levels, learning about art display and communication.
  • Dynamic Learning Experiences: Schools have flexibility to design additional learning experiences that complement the core components.
  • Assessment: A holistic approach to assessment is adopted, focusing on both formative and summative assessment practices. Portfolio assessment is recommended as the primary mode of evaluation. Portfolios document student progress, showcase their work, and encourage reflection.

2024 Syllabus Refresh

The 2024 syllabus refresh included the following updates:

  • Digital Art and Photography: The syllabus now includes digital art creation and digital photography.
  • Curated Themes: The works of local and international artists are organized thematically for deeper inquiry and learning.
  • Emphasis on Drawing: Drawing is emphasized as a visual language for expression and confidence building.
  • New Art Forms: Students are exposed to new art forms such as augmented reality and mural painting.
