Singapore Primary 1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Syllabus

The Mother Tongue Language (MTL) is a compulsory subject in Singapore's Primary 1 curriculum. Students learn their MTL as a second language, with the aim of developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The curriculum was refreshed in 2024 to incorporate more interactive and engaging elements, such as games, animated videos, and augmented reality, to enhance the learning experience. The three official MTLs offered are Chinese, Malay, and Tamil.

Chinese Language

The Primary 1 Chinese syllabus emphasizes fundamental language skills, including Hanyu Pinyin, stroke order, vocabulary, and basic sentence construction. Oral communication is prioritized, with conversational practice forming a key part of the curriculum. The 2024 syllabus aims to make learning more engaging and relevant to students' lives.

Malay Language

The Primary 1 Malay syllabus, based on the latest MOE guidelines, focuses on building a strong foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The curriculum incorporates interactive activities and real-life scenarios to enhance learning. The 2024 curriculum refresh aims to foster cross-cultural literacy and make learning more enjoyable.

Tamil Language

The Primary 1 Tamil syllabus aims to develop students' confidence and proficiency in the language. The curriculum covers key areas such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening, with a focus on correct pronunciation and intonation. The syllabus also includes singing Tamil rhymes and storytelling to make learning more engaging. The 2024 syllabus is designed to provide a stimulating and culturally rich learning environment.
