Singapore Primary 1 Social Studies Syllabus

This syllabus aims to develop students into informed, concerned, and participative citizens, empowering them to be confident and self-directed learners. The curriculum focuses on helping students understand themselves, their roles in society, and how they relate to the people and places around them.

Primary 1: Knowing Myself, Others and My Surroundings

Inquiry Focus: Who am I in relation to the people and places around me?

  • My identity makes me unique.
  • My identity can be shaped by the groups I belong to.
  • I can relate to the places around me.

Guiding Questions and Content:

  • Who am I?
      • My name is part of my identity.
      • My physical features, ethnicity, traits, and talents form my identity.
      • Knowing the similarities and differences among people allows me to understand my uniqueness.
  • How do the groups I belong to shape my identity?
      • I have roles to play in the groups I belong to. These roles can change over time.
      • I share common attributes, such as kinship, ethnicity, values, and interests, with the groups I belong to.
      • I can develop a sense of belonging to these groups.
      • My decisions in a group affect others. My actions have consequences.
  • How do I relate to the places around me?
      • I can find my way around the school and neighborhood.
      • Places are important to me. I interact with family and friends there and have meaningful experiences.
      • I care for these places.

Field-based Learning Experiences:

  • School Trails: Focuses on developing an appreciation for the places around the students.
  • Jacob Ballas Children's Garden: Focuses on learning about the diversity in the environment and how organisms live together.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of Primary 1, students will be able to:

  • Knowledge: Recognize that everyone is unique; identify different roles people play; recognize common attributes within groups; identify different places.
  • Skills: Use questions to collect information; follow a plan to present their work with teacher guidance; make careful observations with teacher guidance; discuss ideas with teacher guidance; consider relevance with teacher guidance; reflect and make informed decisions with teacher guidance; express thoughts and feelings in a group with teacher guidance; work effectively in a group setting with teacher guidance; present ideas and findings with clarity.
  • Values: Appreciate cultural diversity; recognize that beliefs shape one's thinking; consider the ethical effects of one's actions and their impact on others; show curiosity to learn more about the world; show care for the community and the environment; develop a sense of belonging to their community and country; exercise responsibility and integrity in accessing and using information.
